DEPARTED THE SHOW FEELING: Dude. That must feel shitty to be upstaged at your own show.
If you’re in a rush then I can give you something short and sweet: I went to see and write about Chvrches, and I can’t stop thinking about the Danish artist MØ.
There has been a lot of buzz building around the Scottish trio Chvrches. Like many, I have been a fan of the last few singles/teasers that have dropped. Their show sold out in less than an hour, and I knew walking in that it would be a mob scene.
Post-ticket purchasing I was intrigued to discover the new female vocalist MØ on the bill. To be blunt, I was not a fan of her work. That being said, sometimes you have to see a performer to really understand the whole concept. Ultimately I knew I had to catch her set. And holy shit am I glad I didn’t miss this one!
Channeling her inner 90’s Celine Dion-meets-Mariah Carey-meets-Chuck Norris performance moves, I was completely in awe of this chick. This little lady KILLED, SLAYED, AND LAID THE SMACK DOWN. HARD.
MØ hopped on stage in what looked like no makeup, a short denim skirt, and a simple black T. This is obviously a no frills kind of gal, which made her seem extremely approachable. Once she opened her mouth, her vocal range tore the house down. The audience was dancing, screaming, and begging for more. MØ’s stage presence is unlike anything I have seen in a very very long time. It was apparent that she was living every note, every moment as if it was the last time she would ever perform these songs.
Flabergasted after what I had just encountered, the bar was set unreasonably high for Chvrches… poor things. I think MØ was just so good that there was no coming back from that set. Don’t misunderstand, this is just a jaded writer/music fan speaking. Most of the normal people in attendance were exploding with enjoyment when Chvrches took the stage. But poor little Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches. How do you perform after that? It’s like being in a dance battle- you just have to know when to say “alright, you’re the shit. Bye!”
Of course Chvrches were headlining and this is not a Cori Spelling fantasy, the show must go on! Unfortunately the theoretical volume had been turned up so high by MØ, Chvrches pales in comparison. Let’s just say if both acts were in town and you had to make a decision on who you were spending your show dollars: it’s MØ bitches.
